Our Allied Health Assistants (AHA's) are the unsung superhero's. Working alongside an Allied Health Practitioner (AHP) including our Lead Occupational Therapist, our AHA's become the right hand and are integral to a high-standard service delivery.
Our AHA's assist with many behind-the-scenes aspects of therapy practices including assisting the practitioner with preparing a space for a client, preparing resources or equipment, cleaning/sterilising after sessions, assisting with the delivery of group therapy programs and parent educational seminars and even carrying out a task or program written by the AHP therapist for the client, whilst the AHP is speaking with parents etc.
Our AHA's spend time in professional development and team education learning from external training facilities and our clinicians in-house.
WHY HAVE AN AHA?
Having an AHA be a part of your team means that you can stretch your therapy budget further. Whilst the treating AHP still needs to be involved and write you a treatment plan and review it regularly, it means that you can, where appropriate, have sessions with just an AHA in between at a lower hourly rate.
This may involve having both the AHP (OT) and AHA in sessions initially and some planning time, but as this develops, the AHA will take over more sessions and the AHP (OT) will have a session with you less frequently.
The balance of this will vary per family and AHA. It is dependent on the AHP's clinical judgement and informed by the presentation of the client, the goals, the program to be carried out and the experience of the AHA.
Our AHAs have lived experience with children as parents or through education and work. They have all required clearances. Some are in university studying for their Master or Bachelor degree in an AHP field (e.g., Occupational Therapy, Speech Pathology, Physiotherapy etc).
The NDIA does not mandate that Allied Health Assistants (AHAs) have formal qualifications; however, it does require that AHAs are supervised and covered by the professional indemnity insurance of an Allied Health Professional (AHP) or the employing provider of the therapist.
Level 1: Allied Health Assistant
An AHA working under the delegation and direct supervision of a therapist at all times. The AHA must be covered by the supervising therapist’s professional indemnity insurance (or the therapist’s employing provider).
Level 1 Therapy Assistants are seldom used except in group settings where the AHA is a junior staff member and the AHP is and MUST be present. This is because the need for constant direct supervision by the AHP long-term in a 1:1 therapy space would negate any cost benefits to the plan.
Level 2: Allied Health Assistant
An AHA working under the delegation and supervision of a therapist, where the therapist is confident that the AHA can work independently without constant direct supervision. The AHA must be covered by the supervising therapist’s professional indemnity insurance (or the therapist’s employing provider).
Our AHA's are supported by the Company Director and Lead Occupational Therapist and can seek support or consultation as required.
AHA fees are covered by CAPACITY BUILDING - THERAPY SUPPORTS Funding Lines and fees are as outlined by the current NDIS Price Guide 2023-2024*
Therapy Assistant Level 1 = $56.16 per hour
Therapy Assistant Level 2 = $86.79 per hour
As per the NDIS Price Guide; AHA billed services can include direct service provision (face-to-face services), non-face-to-face support provisions, travel (time &/or KMs), non-labour travel costs, short notice cancellations, and NDIS reports.
